Grading guide
What AI pre-grading checks, and what it cannot
The short answer
AI pre-grading looks at a scan or photo of your card and estimates the grade it might get before you pay to submit it. It checks the same four areas graders score: centering, corners, edges and surface. The result is an estimate, not an official grade. Only the grading company can grade a card. Our sister site, the CardRevive AI Grader, gives PSA, BGS and TAG style estimate ranges, and every account starts with 3 free grades.
The four things it checks
Centering: how even the borders are, measured on the front and the back, left to right and top to bottom. Corners: wear, rounding and whitening at each corner. Edges: chips, dents and colour breaks along the sides. Surface: scratches, marks and print flaws on the face. The CardRevive AI Grader measures centering from the card and border geometry, and assesses corners, edges and surface from what is visible in the image. Its report gives estimate ranges and confidence notes rather than one number. It covers Pokemon, One Piece, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Magic: The Gathering, Dragon Ball, Digimon and Lorcana cards.
How to get a useful scan
A flatbed scanner at 600 DPI or more gives the clearest result; a careful phone photo can still help. Take the card out of its sleeve or top loader, keep the whole card in frame, and avoid glare, shadows, blur and filters, because these can hide real flaws or create false ones. Upload the front and the back if you can; one side works, but two give more to go on. The tool finds the card's edges, and you crop and confirm.
What a scan cannot tell you
A flat image cannot copy touch, magnification, angled light or a grader holding the card. The CardRevive AI Grader says it does not authenticate cards and cannot reliably detect counterfeits, trimming, recolouring or restoration. Borderless, die-cut, textured and odd-shaped cards give it less to measure. It is not affiliated with PSA, Beckett/BGS, TAG, CGC or any other grader.
How accurate is it?
CardRevive does not publish an accuracy percentage yet. Its accuracy page says it will only show public figures once it has at least 20 returned grades to compare against its estimates, and at 31 October 2026 it had none. Treat any AI grade, from any app, as a guide to which cards are worth a closer look.
Centering on its own. If centering is the question, the free centering checker needs no login and keeps your photo in your browser while it measures. You line up the card edge and the printed frame, and it shows the left/right and top/bottom ratios for each side. Its PSA table says a PSA 10 needs front centering of 55/45 or better and back centering of 75/25 or better.
What it costs
Every account starts with 3 free grades. After that, credit packs start at A$2.99 for a single grade, and a failed grading job returns its credit. See the AI Grader pricing. Checked 31 October 2026. Current prices are on the CardRevive AI Grader site.
Next step. If the estimate shows a fixable flaw, read how card restoration works before grading. If the card looks ready, see how to get cards graded in Australia.
Questions
Can AI tell me exactly what grade my card will get?
No. It gives an estimate range. Only the grading company issues an official grade.
Does AI pre-grading check for fakes?
No. The CardRevive AI Grader does not authenticate cards and cannot reliably detect counterfeits, trimming, recolouring or restoration.
Is it free?
Every CardRevive AI Grader account starts with 3 free grades, and the centering checker is free with no login.
Should I scan the card in its sleeve?
No. Plastic, glare and shadows can hide flaws or create false ones. Scan the bare card, front and back.
If your card is worth grading, it is worth keeping safe after. When it comes back graded, protect it once with The Tank: it fits whole PSA, Beckett, TAG, CGC, PCG and ACE slabs, A$34.99.
